Project 9
CUSTOM PROTOTYPE WEBSITE | USABILITY & ACCESSIBILITY
This project was to design a custom prototype website with particular focus on optimising usability and accessibility for users with minor disabilities. Specifically, the website caters for disabilities such as deuteranomaly (most common colour blindness condition), minor vision and motor impairment.
Features incorporated include colours suitable for countering deuteranomaly, sizeable navigation buttons with both text and symbolic icons, and increased spacing. Equally, attributes such as mouseover effects like buttons that flip and change colour with descriptions displayed, and general use of ALT tags and so forth.
The website excludes flashing lights and undesirable photo effects, such as geometric patterns, that cause seizures in users with epilepsy. Similarly, to avoid discomfort for users who are photosensitive. The design also provides for ‘forgiveness‘ which is particularly beneficial for first-time users of the website.
These measures are in accordance with the principles and recommendations of Jakob Neilsen, Donald Norman and Fitts’s Law relating to visibility, mapping and affordance. For information on the work of Neilsen and Norman, review this website.
Guitar Universe is an interactive community resource and networking website for guitarists. As the slogan suggests, the goal was to create a user-centred, first-stop website for guitarists. Central to the website are practical information and functional tools useful to both the professional and enthusiast alike. While primarily an informational website, the potential exists for generating revenue from advertising and sale of products.
When implemented, this design will offer users a positive user-experience through its usability, accessibility, visual design and informative content. It provides an effective interactive design solution via its visibility; minimalistic styling; logical, clear and consistent user-interface including organised and streamlined navigation; good scan-ability; and practical content.
The website was developed using Adobe Dreamweaver.
